The power of understanding: When AI guesses, your business pays the price
Across global organisations, AI tools are being adopted faster than teams can properly evaluate them, particularly in learning and development. Platforms now promise instant course creation, automated assessments and one-click translation.
- It looks efficient.
- It sounds modern.
- And it feels finished.
But that confidence is precisely where the risk begins…
AI sounds certain. That does not make it correct
Large language models do not verify truth. They predict likelihood. Their strength is fluency, not factual grounding. This is why hallucination remains a persistent issue – AI systems generate content that sounds plausible while being partially or entirely wrong.
Research has repeatedly confirmed this behaviour. Studies examining the use of LLMs in high-stakes domains such as law and science show that models regularly fabricate references, misstate facts or smooth over uncertainty with authoritative tone.
In learning contexts, this is especially dangerous. Polished content is more likely to be trusted, approved and reused without the level of scrutiny it actually requires.
The illusion of understanding in learning content
Within the learning profession itself, this risk is increasingly acknowledged. L&D specialists have warned that fluent AI output can create the illusion of understanding without genuine engagement or comprehension.
When content looks complete, reviewers are more likely to skim than interrogate. Errors become harder to spot. Missing context goes unnoticed. Subtle inaccuracies pass through compliance and training workflows simply because nothing appears obviously wrong.
Completion rates rise. Understanding quietly erodes.
Machine translation does not remove responsibility
This issue intensifies in multilingual environments. Even advanced neural machine translation systems cannot reliably handle nuance, tone, cultural context or domain-specific terminology without human review.
Industry guidance has long been clear on this point. Machine translation output is a starting point, not a finished product. Post-editing exists because automated systems cannot judge meaning, intent or consequence on their own.
For training content that shapes behaviour, performance or compliance, that distinction matters.
Over-trust is the hidden risk
Research into human–AI interaction shows that people consistently over-trust fluent AI output. Smooth language triggers an unconscious assumption of correctness. Reviewers read faster, question less and approve more readily.
In global organisations, those small errors then scale. A mistranslated instruction or poorly localised scenario can result in inconsistent understanding across regions, undermining the very outcomes learning programmes are designed to achieve.
The risk is rarely dramatic. It is cumulative. And by the time it surfaces, it is already embedded.
Why this matters for learning outcomes
Learning only works when people truly understand it. Understanding requires accuracy, clarity and cultural alignment. Raw AI output guarantees none of these things.
When localisation is reduced to automatic translation or unchecked drafts, organisations lose the proven benefits of native-language learning – stronger comprehension, higher confidence, fewer mistakes and more consistent performance across teams.
Human-in-the-loop workflows restore that foundation. They ensure meaning is preserved, terminology is correct, tone is appropriate and content is safe to use.
MTPE is not a tidy-up. It is protection
Post-editing is often misunderstood as cosmetic polishing. In reality, it is a structured process of evaluating meaning, context, terminology, function and cultural relevance.
It is how automated drafts become accurate, usable and trustworthy. And it is how learning programmes are protected from the silent risks of AI-only translation.
